Traditional Cultural Vocational Practices in the Sissala West District of the Upper Region of Ghana

The Sissala West District is endowed with silent rich creative art and culture, such as pottery, basketry, weaving, woodcarving, music, musical instrument and dance and many other practices since the dawn of ancient times. Some people engage in these forms of cultural practices as leisure, at times they sell their products for money which serves as a means of livelihood to them.

Over the years many of the indigenous artist, artisans, musical instrument manufacturers and poets have died without leaving traces of their art to the next generation, also the influence of formal education and western civilization has lessened the patronage of these indigenous goods. This lays a clear basis to establish the fact that in another 10-20years to come, these cultural resource people will no more be alive to practice or impart their art to the young ones or otherwise they will all diminish to totality without substantiation of their ever existence. There is therefore the necessity to design an innovative method that overcomes these obstacles in order to spark up
development in the district as well as boost the practice and patronage of cultural vocations. This can be done through the establishment of a community based livelihood development system through the strengthening of existing cultural vocations. This will be done through forms of identifying and strengthening these cultural vocational resource persons by supporting, empowering, providing them with tools and raw materials as well as marketing and promoting their products.

As part of theEducational Module of the career development programme the organization, a reading and debate sessions are usually organized between schools.
this is a measure to help develop reading, spelling, writing skills among pupilsand also improve performance at the basic and secondary school certificate examinations.
